Five Trends in the Gaming Industry That Will Be Big in 2024

Technology has always been defined by its constant growth and expansion. As the overarching factor, tech’s evolution in general usually spurs on the same kind of advancement in industries that are heavily tech-reliant. The gaming industry is a perfect example of that symbiotic relationship.

As one of the leading drivers of the rapid advancements in tech, gaming has become a multi-billion dollar global industry, and one of the key incubators of tech trends in general. With a variety of factors like AI now pushing tech into the future faster than ever, 2023 is poised to see a number of trends from the gaming industry really explode. Here are five trends from the gaming world that are expected to be big in 2023.

  •  Generative AI

Artificial intelligence has grown exponentially in the last few years. As a branch of AI, machine learning has led to some fascinating outcomes. Essentially a way for software to collect data, analyze it, and keep learning and improving, machine learning has been a revelation for the number of ways it can be employed across a myriad of sectors.

In a gaming sense, it’s being used to enhance a player’s experience, develop learning models based on their style of play, and individualize the experience for them. One of the most common examples of generative AI being used in a gaming sense is through the use of AI chat bots, conversation-styled games, or digital companions.

As the technology continues to improve, 2023 may see giant steps forward that lead to games that evolve based on a player’s personal decisions and choices while they are playing. That would be groundbreaking, since it means every game experience would be interactive and unique to the player.

  • iGaming and Mobile Gaming

The rise of the smartphone as an indispensable part of our daily lives has had a massive impact on the mobile gaming and online gambling industries. With both ideally suited to get the best out of smartphone technology, each has seen enormous growth in the 21st century, and online casinos are now popular around the world. Even if online gambling isn’t legal in your region, offshore sites are generally available in most parts of the world.

For example, according to Techopedia, the online casino industry is murky in the Philippines. For although gambling is legal in all formats, some online casinos will not accept players from within the country. As a result, the best online casinos in the Philippines are licensed offshore. The same goes for the USA. More and more states are starting to allow online sports betting, yet there are only a handful that have legalized online casinos to obtain licences from local gaming authorities. However, these offshore casinos can operate without restrictions and can accept players from states with strict gambling laws.

On the other hand, mobile gaming continues to flourish, with virtually every major game now having a mobile version with the kind of graphics and gameplay that can rival the best consoles out there. 2023 had already begun showing signs of just how big trends in mobile gaming and online gambling are likely to take off this year.

For mobile gaming, that means there will be more titles to choose from, and upgraded versions of old favorites continuing to improve on the quality and range of famous games. On the other hand, the iGaming industry has seen trends like more and more online casinos now accepting cryptocurrency as a payment method.

  • AR and VR Gaming

The concepts of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are not new by many means. VR gaming outlets and specialized VR entertainment outlets offer amazing experiences where people can use VR headsets and controls to experience any kind of virtual worlds and activities that can be imagined.

On the other hand, AR blends VR with the real world, allowing the user to control their presence in the real world, whereas VR users are just in it for the ride, like watching a movie play all around you. While it may be a beautiful experience, you can merely observe and move around inside the virtual world. However, AR integrates digital information with the real world for an enhanced experience of the world.

The continuously improving technological advancements relating to both VR and AR makes 2023 the perfect year for them to start exploding as the next big commercial step for gaming, making AR and VR gaming more accessible to the general public. The rapidly improving technology also means the games themselves are going to become even better, providing a far more immersive experience.

Given how quickly Apple’s Vision Pro began causing waves once it was released, it’s clear that AR and VR gaming could be another game-changer for 2023. The possibilities are endless since it could mean being able to fully immerse yourself in a game, rather than simply watching it play out on a screen.

  • Crypto Gaming to Either Make or Break

Admittedly, despite all the hype that’s come from it in recent years, the idea of crypto gaming going mainstream and booming is now once again uncertain. Crypto gaming currently employs a play-to-earn model where players can earn cryptocurrency for playing certain games.

Unfortunately, since the idea isn’t a mainstream gaming concept yet, the commercial viability of it has been lacking, and the games themselves are still a far way off in terms of quality. Now that the idea seems to be losing traction again, 2023 seems like the year that’s either going to make or break this trend once and for all.

  • On-Demand Gaming

Just as streaming services like Hulu and Disney+ changed the face of television programming forever, on-demand gaming has the potential to upend the gaming world. With corporate behemoths like Amazon and streaming giants like Netflix already offering it, 2023 looks set to be the year that this concept catches on and grows massively toward becoming the new normal in gaming. Time will tell, though, for now, things definitely look promising for on-demand gaming.
